The calendar is similar to the "Regular" calendar that was presented to the public earlier this year, and follows current state law requiring school to start no earlier than the third Monday in August. It incorporates some changes suggested by parents and teachers during the public review of the two draft calendars this fall. Most importantly, the start date was moved to a Tuesday in response to concerns about young students starting out with a full week of school. Other notable changes:

  • Grading periods were adjusted so that first semester ends at the Winter Break. This means that first semester is only 84 days, while second semester is 96 days.
  • Early release days are scheduled for August 29 and November 5. The August 29 date is designed to alleviate traffic issues expected from a Clemson University home football game. Both afternoons will be time for professional development for staff.

It was the goal of both the board and the administration to be able to approve a calendar with an earlier start, which would require a change in state law. The majority of staff and parent feedback supported an earlier start as well. Although we have reason to hope that the SC General Assembly is moving toward giving school districts the flexibility on the start date, it does not appear that the change will happen soon enough to enact for 2019-2020. We expect to continue pursuing the goal of an earlier start as we begin development of the calendar for 2020-2021.
